Celebrating 20 years of Freedom Festival

Share your memories with us

Life is fast when you’re running a festival! We’re always looking ahead to the next thing, planning out our programmes a year in advance, thinking about what we’re going to deliver our audiences. Which means we don’t often take time to sit back and reflect. As we enter 2027, we’re thinking about the impact of a festival that has been running in Hull for 20 years - having been established all the way back in 2007. In that time we’ve reached millions of people. We’ve celebrated a year as City of Culture. We’ve brought audiences from across the UK and artists from across the world. And we’re proud of what we’ve done – but now, we want to hear from you.

Our pride is rooted in community, and the engagement work we’ve done with local audiences – and in that vein, we want to focus on what Freedom means to the people of Hull.

Throughout the years, we’ve collected and archived content from Freedom Festival performances, projects, workshops and installations, from imagery and film to t-shirts and posters. Now, we want to collect stories and memories directly from our audiences that span over the last 20 years. Did you come to Freedom Festival all the way back in 2014? Can you still recall your first Freedom Festival? Tell us what you encountered and share a memory – or several!

We’re calling on everyone, our audiences, our artists, our volunteers and past team members. Share with us the magical moments you’ve experienced at our festival – be it a story, a video, an image, audio, or something else – we want it!

Over the next few months we’ll be collecting as many stories of Freedom as we can to create something special for our 20th anniversary. To be a part of it, fill out our web form now with anything you have that you’d be happy for Freedom to use:
